Since time immemorial has the nomadic Sámi people
migrated trough the winter landscape in reindeer sleds. Today
snowmobile has taken over, but Pathfinder Lapland continues the
old tradition.
To travel in reindeer pace gives you an
opportunity to really discover nature, when you go slow and quiet
trough the landscape. Depending on temperature and snow conditions
we will change between walking, skiing and to ride on the sled.
Our daily distance will be less then 30 kilometres.
The mountains in the winter are extraordinary. The
weather might be a little hard sometimes but there are always some
amazing days when there are light and views you won't experience
elsewhere. There are no people living up here and really a few
comes here in the winter. So there is a good chance that we won't
spot any other people. But, there will be birds and mammals to see, and if we are lucky we might spot a wolverine or a
lynx.
Trough our Sámi guides you will learn a lot about
Sámi life, both from past times and today. How to be comfortable
in the Arctic climate without modern facilities is a useful lesson. And to have a
reindeer, as a good friend isn't something
you will experience every day.
Food is important, not just for nutrition, but
also for pleasure. We make an effort to serve meals, based upon
Sámi food traditions, that are something special. Locally
produced reindeer meat and fresh fish will be on the menu. During
the trip over the mountains we will stay in a Lavvu, a Sámi tent
similar to a tee-pee. With warm sleeping bags and a heater we will
have a good nights sleep even if the temperature outside is
freezing cold.
Safety is crucial in a trip like this. Pathfinder
Lapland has a long experience of trips in this area. For safety
there will always be a snowmobile following us on the mountains.
And except from transporting equipment, it's our back up if
anything unexpected should happen. |
